Whether you’re new to the podcast space, or you’re looking for something fresh, I got you. I’m a major consumer of information, and aside from the combo of actual books and audiobooks I consume on a regular, I found some gems in the podcast world that feed my cultural appetite when I’m not listening to music.

My favorite podcasts of 2021 highlight music, society, and global cultures (of course). They range from storytelling formats, to interviews and music mixes from around the globe. I guarantee at least one on this list will be added to your repertoire. Happy listening!

Loud: The History of Reggaeton

If you love reggaeton, reggae, African and Latin vibes, or if you’re curious about the genre, Loud is for you. This 10-part podcast series tells the musical history of reggaeton, hosted by one of its pioneers, Ivy Queen. Travel to Jamaica, Panama, Puerto Rico, and beyond, and hear stories from people who navigated through politics, the music industry, and la calle to beat the odds and create an irresistible musical culture. It’s an audible experience full of sound, color, a little comedy, and lot of music. It’s so damn good.

The dukkan show

Hosts and friends, OT, Reem, and Akkaoui talk about everything from democratizing creativity, to identity and active reflection in this insightful and fun podcast that highlights the doers among a “generation of young people who belong nowhere.” Though the mission is to increase Arab representation in the media and the arts, the Dubai-based show is evolving into something global. Considering both the hosts and guests, it’s the most diverse show I’ve come across, with conversations that I want to be a part of.
